Overview

Project Overview

A modern digital ordering platform designed for restaurants that want a direct channel to their customers — bypassing heavy commissions from third-party marketplaces. The experience feels fast, tactile and thoughtful on the phone, and stays manageable for the kitchen on the other end.

Business Goal

Give restaurants a branded, mobile-first ordering channel that lifts average order value and preserves margins by cutting third-party fees.

The Problem

Most restaurant sites are static brochures. Customers who already want to order have to switch to marketplace apps, pay extra, and disappear into someone else's brand. Owners lose data, margin and the relationship.

Research

Understanding the ground

  1. 01

Interviews with restaurant owners about ordering pain points and kitchen workflow.

  2. 02

Analysis of leading ordering apps to map the fastest path from craving to checkout.

  3. 03

Mobile-first usability review: thumb reach, one-hand use, and quick modifiers.

Design Process

From idea to interface

  • Step 01

Mapped user flows for browse → customize → checkout with as few taps as possible.

  • Step 02

Wireframed a menu-first layout that keeps categories, cart and CTA always reachable.

  • Step 03

Designed a modular UI kit — items, modifiers, cart, order status — for consistent reuse.

Wireframing

Structure before style

Low-fidelity wireframes prioritized a persistent bottom cart, sticky category rail, and modal-based item customization to keep the user anchored in the menu.

Solution

The design in action

A component-driven ordering flow with a persistent smart cart, one-tap modifiers, and a checkout that feels closer to a modern product than a marketplace listing. The interface adapts gracefully from small phones to tablets used at the counter.

Key Features

What makes it work

Smart persistent cart

Always-visible cart summary with animated add-to-cart and quick edit.

Tap-fast modifiers

Sizes, extras and dietary tags handled inline with clear visual hierarchy.

Fluid checkout

Address, notes and payment as one focused step — no unnecessary friction.

Kitchen-friendly orders

Orders arrive with clear formatting, item counts and modifiers first.

Challenges

Trade-offs we solved

Challenge 01

Menu density on small screens

Balanced photography, price and modifiers without turning the page into noise.

Challenge 02

Cart that never gets in the way

Designed cart states that stay useful on 360px screens without covering content.

Challenge 03

Perceived performance

Optimistic UI, skeletons and image strategy to make the flow feel instant.

Final Outcome

Where it landed

  • ✓

A production-ready ordering experience aligned with a modern product bar.

  • ✓

Reusable UI system that can be re-skinned per restaurant brand.

  • ✓

Foundation designed to plug into payment, delivery and kitchen tooling.
